Overview

This exciting non-traditional festival opportunity invites Maryland music students to submit recordings for scores and comments by MMEA judges.

For the Fall 2023 All-Access Virtual Solo & Ensemble Festival, there is no approved repertoire list and no instrument/vocal styling restrictions. Any genre, instrument/vocal part, or selection is welcome, so long as it has been approved by the student’s music educator.

Students and educators are encouraged to submit selections for the student’s personal musical growth and/or selections that are representative of their culture or experiences. Get creative! Think outside the traditional musical box!

Submissions may include a solo performance by an individual (with or without live/recorded accompaniment), virtual ensembles, or in-person small ensembles. Students may also submit non-MMEA audition pieces for outside feedback (eg. auditions for fine arts academies, college, musical theatre).

NOTE: All State audition materials WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED!

Festival Goals

  • Encourage students to submit amazing performances they ordinarily would not send to or perform in a traditional festival.

  • Accept any educator approved repertoire and for students to think outside of the traditional repertoire norms.

  • Allow students to form non-traditional small groups and ensembles.

  • Encourage representation of compositions and instruments from a wide variety of cultures and communities.

  • Provide positive and constructive feedback from knowledgeable adjudicators on students’ performances and technical skills.

All students must abide by the following submission requirements:

  • The student’s music choice must be approved by the music educator certifying eligibility..

  • Students may submit as many recordings on as many instruments/voice parts as they would like. There must be a separate form and fee for each submission. Each recording may only contain one piece of music.

  • A copy of the score/sheet music must be uploaded with each submission.

  • Festival submission recordings will only be accepted through the submission platform. MMEA cannot accept recording submissions by any other form (ex: telephone, mail, fax, or email.)

Special requests for alternative submission formats for accessibility reasons are addressed on a case by case basis, and documentation of disability must be provided. Please complete the MMEA Accessibility Service Form to request accommodations.

Music Copyright Rules

MMEA operates in compliance with the US Copyright Act. Anyone using a photocopy of the music that is not in Public Domain must be accompanied by written verification of permission from the publisher. Music purchased online as digital copies should have clear indication of ownership/performance permission.

All submissions will require an uploaded copy/scan of the score or solo part via a secure portion of the submission form. At the beginning of each recording, students must briefly hold up an original copy of the music, visible to the camera.

Recording Requirements

  • Music educators/directors are to review the recording before submission.

  • Backgrounds and clothing must not display any identifying information including, but not limited to, students' names, the name of the school or district, school mascot, or location.

  • Solo submissions: At the beginning of the recording: the student must state their first name ONLY and the instrument/vocal part OR have a title slide at the beginning of the recording with the student's first name ONLY and instrument/vocal part. DO NOT state last name or name of school/organization.

  • Only one video file per submission will be accepted online in the following formats: AVI, WMV, MOV, or MP4.  The maximum file size allowed is 2Gb.  Please be aware that the larger the file, the longer it will take to load.

Helpful Tips for Recorded Submissions

  • Read the recording requirements before beginning recording.

  • If possible, reduce any background noise (fans, TV, etc) during the recording.

  • View the recording in its entirety before submission to ensure it is complete.

  • Save a copy and label it to ensure the correct recording is sent.

  • Do not wait until the last minute to submit! Prepare to submit at least three (3) days prior to the submission deadline to allow for technical issues and troubleshooting.

Adjudication, Scoring Document, Rubric

Each festival submission is adjudicated by one (1) MMEA judge. The only information the adjudicators see is the student’s first name, instrument/vocal part, title/composer, and submission recording.

If an adjudicator recognizes a student or group, the submission will be reassigned, to avoid a conflict of interest.

Individual documents with full scores and feedback will be sent to music educators on record. We do not release scores to caregivers or students.

For the full scoring rubric, please click here.

Certificates

All caregivers (solo submissions) or educators/directors (ensemble submissions) will receive certificate(s) of participation for their student’s submissions.

We will not be offering pins or medals for this festival.

Questions and Communication

To help facilitate this virtual process, caregivers or students may need to communicate with MMEA staff for questions and support. We ask that the student’s music educator be copied on all messages to MMEA to assure transparency and accurate communication. MMEA staff will extend the same courtesy in the event staff needs to communicate with caregivers.

Please contact MMEA Staff at mmeamarylandinfo@gmail.com with questions.
