Overview
Maryland Choral Educators Association (MCEA) is proud to announce the return of the Maryland 5th/6th Grade Treble Demonstration Chorus that will be part of the Maryland Music Educators Association (MMEA) Annual Conference on Saturday, February 24, 2024. The chorus will include exemplary treble singers (unchanged soprano and alto voices) from across the state of Maryland in 5th and 6th grade (as of the 2023-2024 school year). The students must be members of their elementary or middle school choral class.

Objectives
Fifth and sixth grade students will have the opportunity to spend the day making music with a renowned guest conductor and other equally enthusiastic young musicians. Students will rehearse and perform for music teachers across the state. The session will focus on many aspects of the rehearsal process including: warm-ups, vocal technique and intonation, rehearsal techniques for the large chorus, recruitment, time management and rehearsal pacing , programming diverse literature for emerging treble chorus.

Guest Conductor - Emily James
Emily James holds both B.M degrees in Music Education and Voice Performance from Alderson-Broaddus (College) University, and her M.M. degree in Voice Performance from the University of Maryland, College Park.
Mrs. James has over 18 years of experience in the field of Music Education, teaching Band, Strings, Treble Chorus, Private Studio, Adult Church Choir, and General Music. She currently holds the title of General Music & Chorus Teacher at Central Elementary School in Anne Arundel County, as well as Assistant Director for All Children’s Chorus of Annapolis.
Emily James is also an active member of NAfME, MMEA, ACDA, and MCEA, acting as manager of the MCEA 5th/6th Grade Demonstration Chorus previously.
Mrs. James brings a passion for rigorous music learning experiences, whole child development, and vocal excellence, as well as a diverse toolbox of instructional methods. She is a recipient of the Maryland Music Educators Association’s 2019 Outstanding Music Teacher Award, and a national board certified teacher. She currently resides in Annapolis, MD with her husband and four children.

The 5th/6th Grade Demonstration Chorus at the Baltimore Convention Center as part of MMEA’s Annual State Conference.

The full time commitment is required. Full details, including parking and schedule, will be provided after the caregiver registration window closes.

Nomination Process (Educators Only)

Each Maryland public or private school choral educator may nominate up to six singers from their choral classes.

Please choose three of each voice part (three sopranos, three altos). If that is a problem, nominate your best treble singers.

Membership in MMEA/NAfME is not required but strongly encouraged. Join/renew here.

If the school, school booster, or district is paying for students to participate in the demonstration chorus, please indicate this on the nomination form.
